Benefits of LED
At more than 50,000 hours life LED lasts over 15 years at 8 hours per day. CFL with 8000 hours survives for less than 3 years (1/5th of LED) and incandescent bulb with 1000 hours of life lasts 4 months (1/50th of LED)
7W LED can replace a 14W CFL or 60W incandescent bulb – thus saving energy up to 65% and may go up to 80% due to efficient electronic drivers with a power factor > 0.9
Long life leads to savings in replacement and labour cost while high lumen with lower wattage leads to savings in monthly electricity bills. Considerable savings in operation and maintenance cost leads to an early pay back of investment .

SAFETY OF USAGE
No UV and IR radiation compared to CFL, causing less strain to eyes. No photo degradation of fabric and nearby installations in LED lighting.
Solid state components are robust, compact and difficult to damage as against CFL which are big and fragile – leads to space saving, compact fitments and long life
LEDs can produce any colour without use of filters, which is more efficient and can lower costs. Closest to daylight spectrum – lead to better photosynthesis in greenhouse.
LED lights do not flicker as is the case with CFLs – less strain to eyes.
CCTV camera recordings for security and surveillance under LED lights are clearer and sharper leading to better results and enhanced security.
SWITCHING AND DIMMING
LEDs can light up instantly, are programmable and dimming function can be incorporated easily. Frequent switching on the other hand can damage CFLs/ MHs/ HPSV lamps
LED can be easily designed to focus its light as against incandescent bulbs and CFL sources which require external reflectors.
LEDs consume up to 60 to 70% less power, thus lead to significant savings in the costing of a solar power system comprising of PV panels and batteries. It makes usage of Solar
power systems in remote areas more practical and economical.
Helps in LED Certification for Green Building Norms. No Mercury in LEDs as against CFLs which generally contain 5mg mercury/bulb – which poses danger to health and is a
harmful toxic pollutant of the environment. LEDs minimize CO2 emissions – ½ of CFL and 1/9th of incandescent bulbs : in Tonnes per year – LED 0.23*, CFL 0.46* and Incandescent bulb 1.99* (* for 30 bulbs equivalent

NOBEL PRIZE FOR LEDs
Breakthrough of blue LEDs, which facilitated designing of white light LEDs, was identified as most significant effort in changing lighting technology over last decade. The effort was awarded with a Nobel Prize for Physics for 2014. It has had a significant impact on improving the quality of lighting and economizing energy usage.
